Requires certain motor vehicles to install rear-seat detection systems.
This bill requires all new passenger automobiles manufactured in New Jersey to include rear-seat detection systems that alert drivers if a child or pet is left unattended in the vehicle after the engine is turned off. The system must detect unattended occupants, provide audible, visual, and vibration warnings, and cannot be disabled, overridden, or reset to prevent detection. It applies only to vehicles made in New Jersey after the law takes effect (two years from enactment) and does not affect older vehicles. The New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission will set the technical specifications for these systems to ensure they function reliably.
