S 2179 New Jersey Senate · 2024-2025 Regular Session

Requires DOC to provide prenatal and post-partum education and services for certain inmates.

This bill requires New Jersey's Department of Corrections (DOC) to provide prenatal and post-partum services to female inmates under 60 who are pregnant. Upon entering a correctional facility, these inmates must be tested for pregnancy, and if confirmed, they receive mandated services including prenatal medical care, education, nutritional counseling, family planning counseling, and postpartum support. The bill also specifies that inmates choosing to carry pregnancies to term must be provided with obstetrical services, maternity clothing, adjusted housing, and modified work schedules as medically necessary. It applies to all pregnant incarcerated women in state facilities and takes effect immediately.
