This bill requires all new artificial intelligence (AI) data centers in New Jersey to use electricity exclusively from new clean energy sources, such as renewable power or nuclear energy, with no net reduction to the state's clean energy supply. It mandates that applicants for AI data center development must submit a detailed energy usage plan to the Board of Public Utilities (BPU), including specific measures to minimize energy for cooling, optimize water use, and repurpose waste heat. The BPU must approve these plans within 90 days before any data center can connect to the grid. The requirement only takes effect if the BPU confirms a majority of PJM region states (covering 13 states including New Jersey) have similar rules.
