LC 2034 Legislature · 2025 Regular Session

Revise child support guideline laws and establish a committee

This bill updates Montana's child support laws by creating a new oversight committee to review and recommend changes to child support guidelines every four years. The committee will include parents, legal experts, tribal representatives, and administrative law judges who will meet quarterly to evaluate the guidelines and verify the accuracy of the state's child support calculator. Additionally, the bill requires the Department of Public Health and Human Services to hire staff with tax expertise and contract with a private software vendor to assist with calculations. The department must also notify the state supreme court, district courts, and state bar before adopting any new guidelines.
