Radar speed detection units; authorize use by sheriff.

SB 2617 would have allowed Mississippi sheriffs and deputies to use radar speed detection equipment on public roads outside municipal boundaries (specifically, roads at least 1,000 feet beyond city limits). This would have expanded existing authority - currently limited to state highway patrol, certain municipal police, and campus officers - to sheriff's offices for enforcing speed limits on county roads. The bill died in committee on February 3, 2026, and was never enacted.
