SB 2598 would have allowed Mississippi's Department of Finance and Administration (DFA) to follow the University of Southern Mississippi's (USM) recommended terms for selling or leasing a specific 480-acre parcel in Forrest County, as approved by the state's Board of Trustees of Higher Education. The bill required sales to meet fair market value (via two appraisals) and leases to not exceed 40 years, while ensuring the property supported USM's research goals. It also directed proceeds from the sale/lease to a special fund for USM's benefit and retained state mineral rights. The bill died in committee in 2026 and never became law.
