This bill allows child care centers in Michigan to install temporary locking devices on interior doors to secure rooms during emergencies. The law requires these portable locks to be easily engaged from the inside without a key, unlocked from the outside with a tool, and capable of being released by firefighters or staff from the exterior. Operators must submit plans for review, obtain permits, and provide staff training before using the devices, while existing systems must be inspected and approved within a year. Additionally, the bill clarifies that these locks can be used in buildings of any height and removes the requirement for architect or engineer seals on the installation plans.
