Victims of bias-motivated acts may now seek up to $5,000 in statutory damages per violation plus punitive damages, and penalties for hate crimes involving specific protected characteristics now include fines up to $5,000 or up to 2.5 years in jail. The law aims to improve data accuracy, enforcement, and victim support while expanding legal remedies for hate-based harm.
