An Act extending residency requirements for members of the regular police or fire departments and fire alarm division of the city of Newton

This bill requires all members of Newton's regular police and fire departments (including the fire alarm division) to live within the City of Newton or within 35 miles of its city limits within nine months of being hired. It applies directly to city employees in these departments, replacing any existing residency rules that might conflict with this requirement. The bill allows the 35-mile distance to be adjusted through collective bargaining agreements under Chapter 150E, with the measurement taken from Newton's closest border to the employee's residence. The policy change takes effect immediately upon the bill's passage.
