An Act relative to defining zone 1 in the MBTA commuter rail system

This bill directs the Massachusetts Department of Transportation and the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority to redefine Zone 1 of the MBTA commuter rail system. Under the new definition, Zone 1 will include all station stops located outside of Zone 1A but within a 15-track-mile distance from the Boston terminus of each rail line. The primary purpose of this change is to establish a clear geographic boundary for setting commuter rail fares. The legislation will officially take effect on July 1, 2024.
