An Act to combat disposable plastic straw waste

This bill prohibits food service establishments in Massachusetts from providing single-use plastic straws unless a customer specifically requests one or chooses it from a self-service dispenser. The law defines plastic straws as those made from petroleum-based or non-biodegradable materials while excluding reusable options and those made from biodegradable substances like wood or paper. Enforcement of these rules will be managed by the Department of Environmental Protection, which will create regulations to ensure compliance. The restrictions on plastic straw distribution will take effect on January 2, 2025.
