An Act establishing a special commission on creating a more diversified teaching workforce in the Commonwealth

This bill creates the Special Commission on Teacher Diversification in Massachusetts to address the lack of diversity in the state's teaching workforce, where teachers of color make up only about ten percent of the staff despite students of color comprising over forty percent of the student body. The commission will study existing recruitment programs, identify best practices, and develop a long-term plan to increase the number of minority teachers, with a specific focus on overcoming barriers in gateway cities. A 21-member panel, including state officials and representatives from universities, school districts, and teacher unions, will be formed to evaluate current pathways into teaching and submit recommendations to the legislature and governor within 60 days.
