S 2187 Massachusetts Senate · 193rd Legislature (2023-2024)

Resolve establishing a commission on artistic representation in the People’s House

This bill creates a special legislative commission to review and update the artistic representation at the Massachusetts State House. The commission will examine existing art, murals, and statues to identify content that may be racially or culturally insensitive and recommend changes to ensure diverse representation of the state's history and people. Its membership includes appointed officials from various cultural and legislative groups, as well as representatives from Native American tribes, and it will meet at least four times a year to conduct its review. The group is tasked with identifying unused spaces for new artwork, recommending the removal or replacement of certain portraits and statues, and submitting its findings to the state legislature and governor by June 1, 2024.
