An Act regulating central service technicians

This bill establishes new licensing and training requirements for central service technicians, who are workers responsible for cleaning, assembling, and sterilizing medical instruments in hospitals and surgical centers. To work in these facilities, individuals must pass a nationally accredited exam and hold a specific certification, unless they were already employed in the role by the end of 2024, in which case they have 18 months to obtain the required credential. The law also mandates that these technicians complete 10 hours of annual continuing education related to their duties and requires healthcare facilities to provide written verification of their employment history upon request. While the new rules apply to dedicated technicians, they do not prevent doctors, students under supervision, or other licensed health service providers from performing these tasks. The commissioner of public health is tasked with creating regulations to enforce these standards within 90 days of the bill's effective date.
