An Act to ensure access to the full range of treatment options for people with obesity

This bill requires health insurance plans in Massachusetts to cover a full range of treatments for obesity, including nutrition counseling, behavioral therapy, bariatric surgery, and FDA-approved weight-loss medications. It mandates that insurance coverage for these treatments be treated the same as coverage for other medical conditions, meaning patients cannot face higher deductibles, separate limits, or different copayments specifically for obesity care. While the law allows insurers to check if a treatment is medically necessary, it prohibits them from applying stricter rules or criteria to obesity medications than those approved by the Food and Drug Administration. The legislation also directs the state insurance division to inform members about these new coverage requirements through written notices.
