LD 471 Maine House · 131st Legislature (2023-2024)

An Act To Make Necessary Changes To State Law

This bill establishes a five-member Maine State Flag Commission to help prepare the design of the former Pine Tree Flag for a public vote. The commission will consist of the Secretary of State, the State Archivist, an expert in flag design, a graphic designer, and a representative from an arts organization, all appointed to serve until June 2026. The bill also sets a statutory referendum for November 2026 where legal voters will decide whether to make the historic Pine Tree Flag the official state flag again. If a majority of voters approve the measure, the Governor will proclaim the result, and the flag will become official 30 days later.
