JUDGES/JUSTICE OF PEACE: Increases the jurisdiction of justice of the peace courts for civil claims in parishes with a population of less than 26,000 persons
This bill updates the legal authority of justice of the peace courts in Louisiana parishes with fewer than 26,000 residents. It increases the maximum amount of money these courts can handle in civil cases from the current limit to $8,000. The change applies only to smaller parishes and does not affect those that already have municipal, city, or parish courts. This adjustment allows more civil disputes in rural areas to be resolved in local justice of the peace courts rather than requiring them to go to district court.
