SB 456 Illinois Senate · 103rd Regular Session

EDUCATION-TECH

This bill amends the School Code to require every public elementary and high school in Illinois to include a specific unit on Latina, Latino, and Latin American history starting in the 2024-2025 school year. The curriculum must cover the contributions of Latin Americans to civil rights, government, arts, and sciences, as well as their impact on the United States and the Midwest. While the state may provide instructional guidelines, each school board decides the minimum time required for the unit, and compliance will be monitored during annual regional visits. The legislation also allows schools to fulfill this requirement through online programs and provides for teacher training workshops with stipends.
