B 25-0571 District of Columbia · 25th Council Period (2023-2024)

Seizure-Safe Schools Amendment Act of 2023

This bill, known as the Seizure Safe Schools Amendment Act of 2024, updates existing laws to better support students in the District of Columbia who have seizure disorders. It requires parents or guardians to submit a detailed written plan to schools outlining how to treat seizures and authorizes trained school staff to administer prescribed seizure medication or devices. The legislation also allows students to carry and self-administer their treatment if they have demonstrated the ability to do so safely. To support these changes, the Department of Health must provide training for school personnel, and the plan must be kept on file for any staff member who might encounter the student. Additionally, the law grants immunity to schools and employees who act in good faith to provide seizure treatment, protecting them from civil lawsuits while excluding protection for intentional or grossly negligent actions.
